Dubbed Conveyor 800 (the project) supplies over 90 villages and approximately 15.000 ha of potentially productive farmland with water from the nearby Litany River and Qaraoun Dam.
When complete, the project will bring 110 million m3 of water a year from the Litany River – the nation's largest source of fresh water – over territory held in foreign occupation for over two decades.
The Conveyor 800 itself is a series of tunnels, pressurized pipelines and open canals in what the water travels – tunnels, pipelines or canals is determined by topography and hydraulics and is designed using sophisticated software such as ISIS and Surge to make necessary calculations.
The overall Main Conveyor 800 Project includes approximately 52 km long Main Conveyor 800, from the headworks arrangement at the existing Markabe Tunnel to the Chaqra Secondary Conveyor offtake point , together with some 60 km of secondary conveyors (both gravity and pumped) to transport the water to the head of the individual irrigation perimeters. This includes the necessary hydraulic structures such as offtakes, regulating structures, pressure breaks, pump stations, reservoirs etc.
